As part of the ongoing review of the Practice Appointment System there have been some changes which are intended to improve access to GP appointments – both for urgent problems which need to be dealt with quickly and for more routine matters which can wait for a conveniently available appointment.
For ongoing care and routine appointments patients can choose which GP they wish to see. For urgent matters which need to be seen the same day an urgent appointment will be allocated with one of the GPs working that day.
Each day there are a number of ‘On the day’ appointments which become available at 8.00am, with appointments bookable by telephone, and on-line.
Once these appointments have been allocated, if you feel that you need to be seen today, you will be phoned back by the duty doctor, generally within 90 minutes. The duty doctor will discuss the problem with you and agree with you the most appropriate action. This may be an urgent appointment with one of the doctors that day, or to be seen in the next few days for less urgent matters, or perhaps to book a routine appointment when one is available. You may be advised about self care or referred to another care provider e.g A & E or Physio Direct if that is more appropriate.
If you do not feel it necessary to discuss the matter with the doctor that day it will be suggested that you contact the practice again another day when more appointments will be released.
There are also routine telephone appointments available to book if you feel it is something that could be managed by telephone – ask a receptionist if you want to book one of these.
We will continue to keep the appointment system under review in order to ensure that we optimise the service we are able to provide with the resources available.
