Autism and ADHD Referrals

Psychiatry UK Right To Choose | Dr J and Colleagues

We are happy to support requests for referrals for ADHD or Autism assessments.

There is usually no need for a GP appointment to discuss this.

Please use the information provided here, to make your decision on your referral pathway preference. There are 2 NHS referral routes to choose from:

  1. Local NHS referral pathways
  2. NHS Right to Choose: there is a choice of different private providers who act as partners to the NHS (waiting lists may be shorter than for local NHS referrals)

If you decide you wish to be referred via option 2. You need to choose a specific provider (please see options below).

In making your decision, please bear in mind the following

  1. Age of person to be referred: some providers only accept children/young people OR adults
  2. Different specific questionnaires are needed for each provider, found on their websites.
  3. Prescribing for ADHD: not all providers prescribe medication, some only provide a diagnosis. These providers may be suitable for patients who are not interested in medication.
  4. If ADHD medication is started by the Provider, initial prescribing and monitoring will be continued by the Provider until patients are established on a steady dose. GPs can then only become involved with prescribing if a ‘shared care agreement’ is in place. The ‘shared care agreement’ details the responsibilities of the Provider (including annual specialist review by the Provider) and of the GP in supporting patients with ongoing care. This need for ‘shared care agreement’ is also important to bear in mind for patients who choose entirely private (non NHS) Providers.

Once you have made your decisions, have collected necessary evidence and have completed relevant questionnaires, please contact our secretaries to process your referral via cpicb.gmpsecretary@nhs.net. You can also email them with queries.
